Hiking
Hidden behind tall poplars you will find here - in comparison to the sugar confectionery - restrained house. It is one of two arcades designed by architect Hans Scharoun.
Originally, the entire Karl-Marx-Allee should be built in this style, but the GDR superiors suddenly did not like the style of the Bauhaus architect Scharoun. Interestingly, the functionalist and plain buildings were now considered elitist and decadent. Instead, one wanted - inspired by Soviet Russia - more representative buildings and thus created by Hermann Henselmann initiated workers' palaces.

The arcaded houses in Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee 102/104 (location) and 126/128 (location) are listed residential buildings in the district of Friedrichshain. They were built by the architects Hans Scharoun, Ludmilla Herzenstein, Karl Brockschmidt and Helmut Riedel between 1949 and 1951.
In 1949, as part of the “General Plan for the Reconstruction of Berlin”, Hans Scharoun presented the first sketches for the area known as “Wohnzelle Friedrichshain”.
The no-nonsense, functionalist architecture in the tradition of the Bauhaus was then considered bourgeois, decadent and formalistic and was roughly called the American egg crate.
