The two artist couples Gabriele Münter - Wassily Kandinsky and Marianne von Werefkin - Alexej Jawlensky stayed in Murnau for the first time in 1908 to paint together. The paintings they created of the town and its landscape up until 1914 made Murnau a well-known artists' town. Members of the Blue Rider artist group had already lived in Murnau before the First World War. From 1931, the art historian Johannes Eichner and Gabriele Münter lived in the building that later became known as the Münter House.
