On the way from Sterzing towards the south there is a popular photo motif: the reservoir in front of Franzensfeste. It was built in 1939 and 1940 and dams the Eisack. Originally, the electricity generated from it supplied the railway line over the Brenner Pass with energy. The Franzensfest reservoir belongs mostly to the municipality of Franzensfeste, from which it also owes its name. The artificial body of water has an area of around 23 hectares, and its dam wall is around 65 metres high. At the same time, the lake forms the border between the Wipp and Eisack valleys.
