The Koepelkerk (Dome Church) in Witmarsum is of great religious significance to the Mennonite community, extending far beyond the country's borders. The church building is visited annually by people from virtually every corner of the globe. A historic event took place in this church: it was the place where church father Menno Simons broke with Catholic doctrine in 1536. His followers were originally called "Anabaptists." Mennonites, scattered throughout the world, can be found in countries including Russia, Germany, Australia, Africa, North and South America, and Canada. Many emigrated from Friesland and Northern Germany via Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries for their faith.
The Koepelkerk and the cemetery still stand in the village center and preserve a wealth of historical memories from the past ten centuries. The church was used successively by the early Christians (Catholics) and, after the Reformation (from 1580), by the Dutch Reformed Church. Some Witmarsum residents remained Catholic, some joined the Mennonites, and some later left the church as a result of socialism.
The church is now owned by the Protestant community of Witmarsum and is still used for religious services a few times a month. Baptisms, marriages, and burials are still held there.
