Isle au Haut Town is located on the island of the same name in Penobscot Bay. A regular boat service connects the island with the port of the town of Stonington on Deer Isle.
In 1604, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain gave it the name Isle au Haut; it was the highest island in Penobscot Bay.
