The town of Stonington is located in the south of the island of Deer Isle. The village of Green's Landing (as Stonington was originally called) was founded by settlers after 1800. The village was active in shipbuilding, shipping, fishing and lobstering. Since then, Stonington has been one of the best lobster harbors in the country and is the largest lobster harbor in Maine.
In 1870, granite mining became an important industry and the village of Green's Landing developed into a thriving town. In February 1897, Green's Landing was renamed Stonington - after its granite quarries.

Stonington is a tiny fishing town on the southern side of Deer Island. There is a small main street with shopping boutiques and restaurants. Stonington has been consistently ranked as one of the top lobster ports in the country, so be sure to try a lobser roll when visiting! There are also amazing views over the water from the port where you can often see lobster boats coming and going all day.
