The Roosevelt Island Tramway is a cable car that crosses the East River and connects Roosevelt Island with the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The cable car is the first commuter cable car in the United States and opened in 1976 to serve residential areas on the island.

In 2010, the cable car was completely renovated, with all components except the three cable car supports being replaced. A new "dual haul" system allows the cabins to operate independently of each other; previously, the cabins had to be operated simultaneously.
