The fighting in the Hardt (or Harth) forest took place between November 28 and December 4, 1944, during the Battle of Alsace, between French and German troops. The operations began during the advance of General Béthouart's 1st Army Corps towards Colmar, after the liberation of Mulhouse. However, after six days of fierce fighting, French forces encountered bitter resistance and were hemmed in south of the Huningue Canal, which became the southern border of the Colmar pocket until it was reduced on 9 February 1945.
The fighting in the Hardt Forest was one of the deadliest episodes of the Battle of Alsace.
