The East Fork Smiths Fork Trail is a popular spot for day hiking and overnight backpacking. Mountain biking, though, is not allowed on this trail. There is access to the trail via the China Meadows Trailhead, which can be reached by taking Wyoming State Highway 410 south from Mountain View for about 8 miles. No permits are needed for hiking to Red Castle Lakes, but if you decide to spend the night, overnight parking at the trailhead costs $3.00 per vehicle per day, payable at the trailhead.
