The Queen Elisabeth colliery began mining coal in the Wilhelm shaft as early as 1850. In 1910, the Emil shaft was sunk in the immediate vicinity. The cramped terrain resulted in an unusual arrangement of the colliery buildings and a division of labor with the Wilhelm shaft, where the raw coal mined from the Emil shaft was processed. After several transfers of operations, the Emil mine was shut down in 1966.

The winding machine and administration building was planned by Alfred Fischer in the style of modern architecture and is considered a milestone in the detachment of German architecture from historicism. Today the building is used by a painting school and an art gallery.

Schacht Emil is part of the Industrial Heritage Route.
