      History

The region around Telgte was already settled by Saxon tribes in post-Roman times. In the course of the Saxon mission and wars by Charlemagne, this area was Christianized. Ludgerus, the first bishop of Münster, had a church built in Telgte. This original parish church was probably a wooden structure.

Telgte developed at a fork in the trade routes coming from the south towards the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, as the Ems could be crossed at a ford here. There were originally two farms there called Frankenfurt and Telgoth. Telgte, which was first called Telgoth, then Telget and Telgith and finally Telgte, only gradually grew into a town.

The town was granted town rights in 1238 and belonged to the Hanseatic League of Merchants.

Around the year 1500 there were several large fires. The old church was destroyed in one of these fires. Telgte suffered from the plague three times, and in 1599 more than half of the population died.
