Saint Amandus is the patron saint of this church. His feast day is February 6. He is often depicted with a dragon, which represents the pagan rituals he fought. The dragon or serpent lies at his feet and sometimes bites his staff.

Amandus is the patron saint of beer brewers, wine merchants, innkeepers, pharmacists (the slang comes from that) and grocers. He is also the patron against eye diseases, rheumatism, paralysis and livestock diseases. He is one of the 21 holy bishops of Maastricht. He was born near Nantes-France around the end of the 6th century. When he was 25, he became a monk in Tours. Later he lived as a hermit in Bourges for ten years. That hermit's life took place as a walled-in building near the later cathedral. When he was freed, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome where he was ordained bishop around 639.

As a bishop he became a missionary in what was then a somewhat pagan Flanders, where he founded many monasteries. He was later chosen as patron saint of many churches in Flanders.

Also popularly called the apostle of Flanders. He died around 675 in Elnon where he is also buried. This town was later named after him: Saint - Amand - Les - Eaux.
