The Wietzer Ölberg (Oil Hill) is a man-made hill dating back to the era of oil production. Between 1932 and 1963, a dump was created here from the waste from the nearby mine, which, at 41.5 meters, became the highest elevation in the municipality. After the mine was closed, the area was left to its own devices, allowing dense, wild vegetation to develop on the oil-bearing sand. This natural forest stands in stark contrast to the surrounding, regularly reforested pine forests and today provides a special habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

Today, the Ölberg is not only a silent testament to Wietze's industrial past, but also a popular vantage point and place for nature experiences.
