The Oosterduinse Meer, locally better known as Lake Como (why this lake is called that is unknown), is a sand pit that was created in the 1950s and 1960s by excavation of the former Oosterduinen for the benefit of sand extraction for the lime sand brick factory of Xella in Hillegom.
The lake is approximately 1 km long, 400 meters wide, has a maximum depth of 13 meters and is an official swimming water location.
