Where Ulsnis is today, there once lived a giant called the Old Man. His son got into a fight with him and moved to the other side of the Schlei. They threw giant stones at each other until both were fatally wounded.

The Old Man fell headfirst into the Schlei, where the peninsula "Nes" on the Gunnebyer Noor now lies. The place is now named Ulsnis after the Old Man (Ools Nes).
