The imposing town church (built 1719 - 1723) is the first and largest central church building in Thuringia and is considered the structural forerunner of the Dresden Frauenkirche. The church occupies almost the entire north side of the market square and proudly towers over the entire city center.

The showpiece of the town church is the organ, which is 8 m wide and 9 m high. It was installed from 1724 by the most important Thuringian organ builder Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost. With its 2,806 pipes, it is Thuringia's largest baroque organ and at the same time one of the most sonorous from Bach's time.
