From the upper Nideck Castle you can see the memorial of the "European Center of Deported Resistance Fighters - Former KL Natzweiler Struthof" in the distance.

The Struthof-Natzweiler concentration camp, built in 1941, is the only facility of its kind on French soil. 52,000 prisoners had to do forced labor in the nearby quarry. 22,000 of them died - mostly from hunger and exhaustion.
