The powder tower dates back to the 13th century and was once part of Attendorn's city fortifications. Of the 12 towers and 4 gates, only the powder tower and the Bieke tower remain today after the city fortifications were demolished (1812).

The powder tower got its name because the Landwehr battalion, which had been stationed in Attendorn since 1837, stored its powder supplies in this tower. The middle and upper floors could only be accessed by a ladder from the city side. (Source: medienwerkstatt-online.de/lws_wissen/vorlagen/showcard.php?id=27530)

On the ground floor of the tower there was a dungeon in which, among others, Anna Katharina Schnütgen, who had started the great city fire in 1783, was once imprisoned.

A bronze plaque on the Powder Tower today commemorates Ferdinand Bellebaum, who distilled chicory coffee (better known as "Muckefuck") at the Powder Tower during the First World War and dreamed of good coffee. His dream can still be experienced today: Attendorn has named its fair trade city coffee after him: "Bellebaum's Dream".
