Until 1959, the Nickey Line transported passengers from between Luton and Hemel Hempstead. The 9-mile (14 km) stretch is now a lovely cycle path through peaceful countryside. It's thought that the name could come from the slang term "down the nick" which engine drivers would use when the engine ran out of steam.

Cycling

A decent length of disused railway line stretching from Hemel Hempstead to Harpenden. The first part leaving Harpenden is a sealed surface great for all cycling abilities but then after you pass Roundwood School the surface becomes broken and there are quite a few potholes making it suitable for Touring, Gravel or CX bikes. After crossing the roundabout at Redbourne the surface can get a bit muddy.
