The Löbau-Zittau Railway Company received the concession to build the railway line from Löbau to Zittau on June 25, 1845. As a result, construction of a viaduct designed for two tracks over the Höllengrund valley in Großschweidnitz began in 1846. Construction took two years and was completed in 1847. The ceremonial inauguration took place on June 10, 1848.
