It is considered a true "open-air museum" due to its wealth of funerary art, including sculptures, aedicules, and chapels created by renowned artists.
Designed by architect Carlo Maciachini, it was inaugurated in 1866.
It houses the Famedio, a large neo-Gothic building at the main entrance, where illustrious figures such as Alessandro Manzoni are buried.
