Rockefeller Park encompasses most of Battery Park City’s large, green lawns and features a large playground, gardens, public art installations, and a sheltered pavilion. Visitors can find restrooms and public telephones at the Park House, where BPC Parks staff offer visitor information. Named in honor of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who signed the Battery Park City Authority Act in 1968, this eight-acre park is the largest section of the 36-acre park system developed by the Battery Park City Authority. Located on a former landfill along the western edge of Lower Manhattan, Rockefeller Park juts into the Hudson River and is surrounded by high-rises to the east. The park opened in 1992 and provides both active recreational opportunities, and spots just to relax, also serving as the northern terminus of the 1.5-mile-long Esplanade.
