Traces of a Roman camp were found along the Roman road which passed through the forest.
Like its neighbor, the Foucaudière forest (Saint-Laurent-des-Autels), Leppo is a residue of a larger forest massif, Le Lattay. The latter extended, before the great clearings of the Middle Ages, from Vertou in Loire-Atlantique to the Mauges, notably Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay.
The Leppo Forest was a bloody theater of the Vendée War. On March 12, 1794, Republican soldiers arrived at Fief-Sauvin and Puiset-Doré and killed around thirty people in the town of Puiset. The Republican troops then set fire to the Leppo woods in which the inhabitants had found refuge. Forced to leave the forest to escape the flames, the villagers, including many children, were massacred at the edge of the woods by the Republican troops who were waiting for them there. In total, 56 residents were massacred around the Leppo Forest.
A commemorative cross installed on the site recalls this event.
