This spectacular cliff, about 90 metres high, owes its name to its curious geology: the vertical basalt columns resemble the folds of a Scottish kilt, while the horizontal layers of rock are reminiscent of the fabric's pattern. It was formed by ancient lava flows about 60 million years ago. From above it looks like a simple rock face, but look closely and you'll quickly understand where its name came from. With Mealt Falls cascading down the cliff face directly into the sea, it's one of Skye's most peculiar sights.
