Mata Hari, pseudonym of Margaretha Geertruida (Griet) Zelle (Leeuwarden, August 7, 1876 – Vincennes, October 15, 1917), was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan. During the First World War she was recruited as a spy. However, she was accused by the French of double espionage and shot. The question of whether she was really a double agent is subject to debate and has contributed to the creation of legends around her.
