Leeuwarden Station opened on October 27, 1863, with the opening of the Harlingen–Leeuwarden railway line. This was the second railway line operated by the State Railways Company (SS). In 1866, the line was extended to Groningen. This was part of Line B, built by the Dutch State, from Harlingen to Nieuweschans (completed in 1868).

Hiking

Leeuwarden's neoclassical station dates from 1864. Forty years later, the station hall was thoroughly renovated. The central risalite was replaced by a new building with a large six-part semi-circular window above entrance doors. The hall was decorated with tile tableaus, ceramic tiles with coats of arms and stucco work in the shape of locomotives.
