Hólar Cathedral, also known as Hóladómkirkja in Icelandic, is the oldest stone church in Iceland, built in 1763. The church is built with red sandstone from Mount Hólabyrða. The cathedral has housed several churches over time, the first one built in 1050 by Oxa Hjaltasonar. The current church, which stands on the same site, was built between 1757 and 1763 under the leadership of Bishop Gísli Magnússon and architect Laurids de Thurah. The cathedral was consecrated on November 20, 1763. Today the church is the official church of the Bishop of Hólar, currently Solveig Lára Guðmundsdóttir
