"This arch was erected in October 1924 as the second torii arch at the Sanno Shinto Shrine. When the atomic bomb exploded on August 9, 1945 at 11:02 a.m., one of the pillars was destroyed. Located just 800 meters southeast of the hypocenter, the upper parts of the arch were scorched black by the intense radiant heat, one of the pillars and its upper parts were destroyed by the explosion, and the upper part of the crossbeam shifted in the opposite direction due to the pressure of the explosion. The explosion of a single atomic bomb reduced the surrounding neighborhood to rubble, but this arch survived the explosion and stands to this day on only one pillar as if testifying to the destruction caused by the atomic bomb. The base of the pillar and the adjacent parts have been re-fixed for safety reasons. The city of Nagasaki has installed this memorial plaque to pray for the souls of the people who died here and to ensure that this tragedy never happens again."
