Its origins are very remote and date back to Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius, who had it built with the remains of a temple dedicated to Jupiter Ammon. The time of its construction is unknown, it probably arose between the 8th and 10th centuries.

Its origins are very remote and trace it back to Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius, who allegedly had it built with the remains of a temple dedicated to Jupiter Ammon.
The time of its construction is unknown, it probably arose between the eighth and tenth centuries.
It is called "in octavo" because it is located at the eighth mile of the Roman road ("Via Faventina", indicated in the Peutingeriana Table) that connected Faenza with Etruria.
