After crossing into Austrian territory, the Drau is dammed for the first time near Strassen. In Lienz, it is joined by the Isel, which almost quadruples its size. The Isel is particularly dominant in early summer when the snow melts in the Venice group. This is why the Drau above the mouth of the Isel is sometimes called the Little Drau; not to be confused with the Little Drau in the Rosental.
