More than a hundred years ago, the landscape in the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park was characterized by intensive grazing with sheep. Most of the slopes of the valleys were devoid of forest and one could see the imposing rock formations that gave the region its name.

Only the prickly juniper was spurned by the sheep, which led to the juniper heaths that were once typical of the "Franconian" people.

Today many rocks have disappeared back into the forest and juniper heaths have become a rarity. Nevertheless, there are still some places where this beautiful cultural landscape has been preserved.
