"Joaquín Vara de Rey y Rubio (Ibiza; August 14, 1841-Santiago de Cuba; July 1, 1898) was a Spanish soldier and politician, hero of the Cuban War for his defense of the El Viso fort in 1898.Biography
He graduated from the General College as a second lieutenant, rising to the rank of lieutenant in 1862. He fought the cantonal rebellions of Cartagena and Valencia and fought in the Third Carlist War. In 1884 he requested his transfer to the Philippines where he was given command of the Spanish Regiment, in 1890 he was appointed military-political governor of the Mariana Islands and then of Zamboanga.1 The following year he was promoted to colonel and returned to Spain.Upon returning to Spain, he was assigned command of the Ávila garrison until April 1895. Later he volunteered to serve in Cuba.2 He was named military commander of Bayamo. He commanded the regiment that fought in the Battle of Loma de Gato, in which the Spanish killed the rebel leader José Maceo, brother of Antonio Maceo.2 Due to his brilliant performance, he was promoted to brigadier general."Cuban War and death...
