The construction work under the rule of John II and Manuel I lasted for six decades from 1428 to 1488. The tower, which is around 25 m high, is of more recent date (from 1556). The church has several architectural styles. However, many elements can be classified as Plateresque. For example, the main entrance and the south entrance, both of which are richly decorated. The interior of the church is from the so-called "mendicant Gothic" (Gótico mendicante), which was introduced into the cities by the Franciscans and Carmelites.
