A detour up to the Erentrudis Chapel is rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view.

The Erentrudis Chapel stands on the southeastern peak of the Tuniberg on the Munzinger Chapel Hill. There, one of the most beautiful vantage points in the Breisgau region is located, high above the plain, with views of the Bay of Freiburg and the Markgräflerland region. Today, the chapel is also considered a landmark of the Tuniberg and, as a symbol visible from afar, is illuminated even at night. The chapel is named after an abbess on the Nonnberg near Salzburg who lived around 700 AD. Erentrudis became the first abbess of the Benedictine monastery founded by Rupert on the Nonnenberg in Salzburg. Her Catholic feast day is June 30th. In 1745, the chapel received a relic of the canonized Salzburg abbess Erentrudis. Since then, the name Erentrudis Chapel has become common for the Apollonius Chapel, which has stood on this site since the Middle Ages. In 1666, the chapel had to be expanded due to the large number of pilgrims flocking to it after the Thirty Years' War. In 1713, the chapel was repurposed as a defensive wall for the Freiburg fortress troops and was severely damaged. However, reconstruction began in 1714, financed by donations. In 1750/52, Matthias Faller (1707-1791) renovated the Erentrudis Chapel. He created, among other things, the altar decorations. His statues of Erentrudis and Trudpert are now located in the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg. During the 19th century, the chapel gradually fell into disrepair. It was renovated again in 1877, and on Trinity Sunday 1879, Freiburg's Auxiliary Bishop Lothar von Kübel consecrated the altar. The current painted winged altarpiece is by E. Riess of Freiburg. The Erentrudis Chapel is now one of the region's most important sights.
