Hiking

You pass the mill 'De Onderneming', an octagonal flour mill from 1858 and walk through the 'dijkgat'. The dike denomination is located in the old medieval dike. On top of the dike there is a so-called 'dike shelter' or 'shot beam house'. The beams in this house were used to close the passage during heavy storms and high water at the time when Vierhuizen was still vulnerable behind two dikes. After the reclamation of the Lauwerszee in 1969, the beams became redundant and the house now stands as a reminder of those more unsafe times.
