In the area of the slopes of the Saar valley, some of which are over 30° steep, there are frequent areas without vegetation, which consist mainly of square quartzite rubble, measuring between centimetres and decimetres. This material was formed by frost weathering on the steep rock faces of the Saar valley. The main period in which these rubble heaps were formed was during the ice age phases of the Quaternary, when over the last 2 million years or so it was often around 10° colder in the Saar valley than it is today and under climatic conditions such as those prevailing today in Siberia or northern Canada the deeper subsoil was permanently frozen. Under the climatic conditions of the current warm period, these rubble heaps are developing only slightly. In fact, in many places one can observe that the rubble is covered with moss, woody plants are settling in the rubble heaps and this relict relief form is slowly being conquered by vegetation.

Easy "hiking trail" for everyone. No special equipment necessary.
