In 1804, 50 defense towers were built along the east coast of Ireland in anticipation of an invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte. These towers were based on a design from Mortella, Corsica, but due to a naming error they were called Martello Towers. Although the feared invasion never took place, many towers are still in good condition.
