From about the 9th to the 12th century, there was a Slavic castle on the southern part of today's castle island. In the 12th century, Prince Jacza of Copnic ruled here until his death in 1176.
Copnic or Copanic means island town or hill town; this is the origin of the current name Köpenick (Copanic, Copenic, Coepenick, Cöpenick, Köpenick).
