The church stands directly opposite the Blauer Hof. It is the first building north of the Alps to have curved facade elements (a characteristic of the High Baroque). On June 11, 1693, Emperor Leopold I personally laid the foundation stone. The architect was probably Carlo Antonio Carlone from 1693 to 1703, and Christian Alexander Oedtl was in charge of construction. The new church was consecrated on May 31, 1699.
