The canal was built between 1797 and 1803 and was originally used to transport wood and bricks from Wiener Neustadt to Vienna. The canal was part of a larger system that was originally intended to be extended to the Adriatic Sea to transport goods between the Alps and Vienna. With the development of the railway in the 19th century, the canal lost its economic importance. For some time, excursion boats also operated on the Wiener Neustadt Canal to transport tourists. However, this use ended when shipping on the canal was stopped and the water level was no longer sufficient.

Today the canal is a popular local recreation area, and cycle paths such as the Thermenradweg run along its banks.
