Habitat:
The downy birch is a pioneer tree species whose seeds are spread by the wind. It quickly colonizes new open spaces and can therefore be found throughout Europe.Occurrence:
As a pioneer tree, the downy birch occurs on bare soil areas, clearings and forest edges. It lives permanently mainly in damp locations where other tree species have problems. In the Rhön, the downy birch therefore occurs in large numbers in moorland areas.Interesting facts
This type of birch can tolerate "wet feet" for long periods of time without suffering damage. Individual trees can live up to 120 years. In the Rhön, the birches often show "witch's brooms" - bushy growths caused by a sac fungus.
