The former "Hospital of the Holy Spirit", in which the town hall has found its new home, dates back to 1486. At that time, the Ellwangen hospital - a poorhouse and old people's home as well as a hospital - first mentioned in documents in 1335, was moved from the monastery district to the town. From 1699 to 1702 it was largely renovated and enlarged under Prince Provost Franz Ludwig of the Palatinate and was given its current appearance. From 1749 to 1752 it was again redesigned and expanded according to plans by Arnold Friedrich Prahl. From 1987 to 1989 the former hospital was converted into the town hall.

The former Holy Spirit Hospital, in which the town hall has found its new home, dates back to 1486. At that time, the Ellwanger Hospital - a poorhouse and old people's home as well as a hospital - which was first mentioned in documents in 1335, was moved from the monastery district to the town.

Thanks to generous donations, the hospital was rebuilt and expanded between 1699 and 1702. It was given its baroque appearance between 1749 and 1752 according to plans by the town architect Prahl, who also consulted Balthasar Neumann on the measures.
