Christiansfeld is also special in the sense that the town was planned and built according to the same model as the first Brethren town in Herrnhut, Germany. It therefore did not develop slowly like other small towns in Denmark. Most of the town was built between 1773 and 1812. The old part of the town is now a vibrant cultural center at the heart of Christiansfeld, a part of the everyday life of the residents

and the town. Christiansfeld is on the Danish tentative list for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

This underscores how special and remarkable this town is.

The most beautiful Brethren town in Europe.

The Brethren in Christiansfeld is an independent Protestant congregation

and part of the worldwide Brotherhood with towns and communities in many countries. The congregation's ideology is not influenced by its geographical location,

and many of the towns are built exactly like Christiansfeld. Christiansfeld is considered the most beautiful old Brethren town in Europe because the former Christiansfeld has been preserved. The buildings today remain exactly as the town was when it was built at the behest of King Christian VII in 1773.

Christiansfeld is dominated by the Brethren, which was instrumental in the construction of this place formative. The center is set in a uniform style. The old cemetery shows how much equality was at the heart of parishioners. In the village of course there are Herrnhuter stars to buy and especially delicious gingerbread in a special store!

UNESCO has named Christiansfeld a World Heritage Site on the grounds that the city is "a unique testimony to a cultural tradition that still exists" and a "unique example of architecture that illustrates a specific time in human history". In Denmark only seven places have been designated as World Heritage and only 1,031 worldwide. So it is something very special to bear this title and the Christiansfelder are particularly proud of it.
