Christiansfeld is also special in the sense that the town was planned and built according to the same model as the first Brethren town in Herrnhut, Germany. It therefore did not develop slowly like other small towns in Denmark. Most of the town was built between 1773 and 1812. The old part of the town is now a vibrant cultural center at the heart of Christiansfeld, a part of the everyday life of the residents

and the town. Christiansfeld is on the Danish tentative list for inclusion on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

UNESCO has named Christiansfeld a World Heritage Site on the grounds that the city is "a unique testimony to a cultural tradition that still exists" and a "unique example of architecture that illustrates a specific time in human history".
