Gospa od Škrpjela (Italian Madonna dello Scarpello, German Maria vom Felsen or vom Riff) is an artificial island created by a bulwark of rocks and old sunken ships that were loaded with stones. The tradition of rock throwing is still alive today. Every year on July 22nd, the festival called fašinada takes place, when the locals throw stones into the sea to increase the size of the island. In 1452, the first Catholic church on the island, Gospa od Škrpjela, was built. The current church dates from 1632 and was renovated and expanded in 1722.The island, like the entire Bay of Kotor, has been a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage Site since 1979.
