Beautiful area with very stately old beech trees.

    Translated by Google ‱

These veteran beech trees are the remains of an extensive grazing forest - from a time when pigs were still driven into the forests, when people still lived from the forest. The forestry term for a productive seed year, full fattening, is still a reminder that domestic animals were regularly well fed or "fattened" in seed years. In times of need, beechnuts were also a welcome source of food for humans. Lightly roasted, they taste excellent and were used as a coffee substitute. Their oil is tasty and has a long shelf life. When young and tender, salad can be made from beech leaves. All of this is a thing of the past. Today, beechnuts are once again available only to wild animals. In autumn, wild boars, deer and roe deer eat their way up to fat reserves. Squirrels collect them for the long winter. And whatever beechnuts are left over and survive the winter lead to a renewal of the forest - just as nature intended.

Please be careful: raw beechnuts are
slightly poisonous! So don't eat too many.
Roasting them makes them aromatic and digestible.

It's nice that the large beech trees have survived the last hot and dry summers so well.
