On the rugged west side there are several entrances that allow sporty hikers to climb up without any problems, even without a rope. The Steinwand in the Rhön Mountains is an offshoot of the Maulkuppe and a very popular climbing crag. The Steinwand rises to a height of 646 meters above sea level at its highest point and is a very steep rock face made of phonolite in the heart of the Rhön Mountains.
