The rock walls rise up around 20 metres from the basalt-like phonolite rock. The steep rock walls are particularly visible on the east side. On the rugged west side there are several entrances that allow sporty hikers to climb up without any problems, even without a rope. But walking around the rock formation, which is over 100 metres long, is also an experience.

The Steinwand in the Rhön Mountains is an offshoot of the Maulkuppe and a very popular climbing crag. Located not far from Poppenhausen and the Wasserkuppe, the Steinwand attracts numerous enthusiastic climbers from near and far to the Rhön Mountains. The Steinwand is a natural climbing paradise and, for many, more attractive than an artificial climbing wall in a climbing hall. The Steinwand rises to a height of 646 meters above sea level at its highest point and is a very steep rock face made of phonolite in the heart of the Rhön Mountains.
