There was probably a church in Pottschach as early as the Carolingian era. Remnants of the wall of this old church were probably used for today's church building. The election of St. Dionysius as church patron also points to the Carolingian era.
The tower was built between 1520 and 1526. During this time, the walls of the main nave were raised and the ribbed vault that still exists today was created. Thus the church had its present appearance in 1526, with the exception of a few additions.
