When Otto and Bernard van Ruins built the first fortified house here in 1300, at the junction of the Bornsche Beek and the Deventer-Oldenzaal road, they took the name of the estate and called themselves Van Weleveld. Their world was relatively simple compared to our time and therefore easy to survey.
