Central square with great sights such as the Palazzo dei Priori, Cathedral di San Lorenzo and the Fontana Maggiore.

One of the most beautiful squares in Italy, the centre of life and tourism in the city of Perugia. There are many artistic buildings all around, the picturesque Maggiore fountain in the middle of the square and many restaurants, bars and (chocolate) shops that invite you to stroll and enjoy the beauty of the city.

On the square is the magnificent Fontana Maggiore, a Romanesque masterpiece created between 1275 and 1278 by the Pisan father-son team Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. This pink and white marble fountain is decorated with bold decorative flourishes, from the sign of the zodiac to a griffin, the city symbol. On the other side of the fountain, the steps rise to the austere Gothic cathedral, a lively meeting place for people and pigeons. Inside is the mystical Deposition of the Cross, painted by Barocci under the influence of the poison of a rival and inspired by the masterpiece of Rubens, known as the Antwerp Deposition from the Cross. From the piazza you descend to the lively Corso Vannucci. On the right side you can see the gothic pinnacles of the Palazzo dei Priori (City Hall), one of the largest public palaces in Italy. Fan-shaped steps lead to the Sala dei Notari, the lawyers' assembly hall, painted at the end of the 13th century.
