There's an information board here telling about the history of the area. Up on the hill, there are great views of the mouth of the Tyne and the Collingwood Memorial. Locals are rightly proud of him of Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood who was born in Newcastle in 1748. He was an able officer who served in the American War of Independence and Napoleonic Wars. Collingwood was Nelson's Second in Command at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and took command when Nelson was fatally wounded.

Found a good cafe on the beach, excellent way to refuel if you are just finishing the coast-to-coast and then have to cycle to a train station!
